The IVF Money Roadmap: two guides and a printable checklist

Two guides and the printable tier checklist.

I want to tell you about a spreadsheet.

It was 1am. My partner was asleep. I had the clinic's quote open in one tab, a medication estimate in another, and a credit card statement in a third. I did the math four different ways, hoping one of them would come out less bad.

It didn't. It was worse each time.

Not because I'm bad with money. Because the number I'd been planning against — the one the clinic said out loud, the one I'd been quietly comparing myself to — was never the real number. It was the first number. The one before medications, before genetic testing, before storage, before the completely ordinary fact that most people need more than one round.

And I remember the exact moment it landed on me: everyone around me seemed to be affording this, and I could not work out how.

That's the question almost nobody says out loud. How is everyone even affording this?

Here's what I need you to hear before you read another word. You are not behind. You are not bad at this. You were comparing yourself to a number that was never true for anyone — not for you, not for the person with the nice bag in the waiting room, not for the people posting their cost breakdowns. Almost nobody is paying the number they were quoted. They are paying the real one, and almost nobody was ever told the difference.

Your calculator already fixed that part. You ran your real number. That was the hard thing, and you did it.

But a real number on its own is just a bigger wall. What I needed that night wasn't a number. It was the how. Where the money actually comes from. What to ask your insurer that gets a real answer instead of a script. Which financing option quietly traps people. The billable things nobody puts on the website. The question to ask before you sign a job offer — the one that can be worth a genuinely eye-watering amount, and that almost nobody thinks to ask.

Nobody handed me any of that. So I went and found it.

Then, because I apparently don't know when to stop, I went looking at the other half too — the body side. What the actual research says about preparing for IVF.

That second part is what really got me. Because the more I read, the more I noticed the same thing over and over: almost every fertility recommendation I'd been following was stated with total confidence and supported by almost nothing. The topic was real. The certainty was invented.

At some point that leaves you three choices.

You can keep white-knuckling it — assume everyone else knows something you don't, and hope. You can disappear into the forums and come out more frightened than you went in. Or you can get the honest version, in one place, and walk into this with your eyes open.

I could not find the honest version. So I wrote it. And then I had every claim audited — checked against the actual study, the actual source — and everything that could not be stood up, cut. That is why you can trust the parts that survived.

Which brings us to you.

I Went Through IVF Broke and Confused

Here's the Money Guide I Wish I'd Had.

Everything the calculator cannot tell you. Where the money actually comes from, what to ask, what to avoid, and the conversations that come with all of it.

  • So… how is everyone affording this?
  • The number they tell you vs. the number that's real
  • The stuff nobody warns you about — medications, genetic testing, storage, monitoring, anaesthesia, travel, unpaid leave
  • Insurance will break your heart before it breaks even
  • Loans, bundles and credit cards — what each option is actually for
  • Your HSA/FSA is trying to help you (sort of)
  • The free money nobody applies for
  • Should you bundle? The math nobody shows you
  • Ask before you sign — the job-offer question
  • The guilt isn't yours to carry

Ten chapters. Every one ends with a single concrete thing to do that week.

I Tried Everything Before IVF

Here's What Was Actually Worth It.

The body side — sorted honestly into three tiers, so you can tell what is actually proven from what is just loudly repeated. Most guides treat every recommendation as equally true. This one doesn't.

  • Tier 1 — Strong human evidence. Multiple studies, often randomised trials or meta-analyses, showing a consistent benefit.
  • Tier 2 — Emerging evidence. Early human studies or strong biological plausibility, not yet proven in large definitive trials.
  • Tier 3 — Anecdotal / community-sworn. Women swear by it, there is a plausible mechanism, and the formal research is thin or absent.

Twelve chapters — vitamin D, sleep and melatonin, movement, environmental load, the sworn-by supplements, endometriosis, PCOS, nutrition, and the emotional side. Ending in a printable checklist sorted by tier.

What this isn't

Worth being straight with you, because the fertility space has enough dishonesty in it already.

If you're thinking…

Is this going to tell me it'll work? No. Nothing can promise you that, and anything that does is lying to you. What these guides promise is narrower and true: you will know how to afford this, and you will know what the evidence actually says about preparing your body.

I've read enough fertility content already. You probably have. But most of what you've read either oversold something or refused to give you a number. This does the opposite of both. When the evidence says something didn't work, it says so.

I don't have money to spend on a book. I know. That is why it is $39 for both, once, no subscription — and why you can get it back.

Will this fix my finances? No. It isn't financial advice and it cannot conjure money. What it does is stop you losing money to the things you didn't know to ask about.

Where you are now

You can close this tab and carry on exactly as you are: with a real number and no plan for it, and a body you are trying to prepare using advice nobody has checked. That is allowed. It is how most people do it.

Or you can spend $39 and two evenings, and walk into this knowing the questions to ask, the traps to avoid, and where the evidence actually stands. Not certain. Prepared.

Imagine your next appointment, and instead of nodding along, you ask the two questions nobody else in the room is asking.

Imagine knowing, before you sign anything, whether the bundle is genuinely a better deal than paying cycle by cycle — worked through on your realistic cycle count, not your hopeful one.

Imagine finally being able to tell the difference between the advice that is real and the advice that is just loud.

That is what I wanted, that night at 1am, when I could not work out how anyone was affording this. I got there. You don't have to take the long way.

P.S. The calculator is free and takes two minutes. If you haven't run your real number yet, do that first, then come back — the guides will make more sense, and you will know exactly what you are planning for.
